1) Farmers warned of new virus:
http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-06-12/ahmedabad/32194288_1_new-virus-plant-viruses-crops
A new species of viruses that attack plants was found (begomovirus) called the Raddish Leaf Curl Virus, it attacks radish crops and okra and tomato crops. The virus spreads by using a bug called the whitefly to spread. The whiteflies distribute the virus by their salvia because they eat food on the plant leaves. When they go from plant to plant to eat, their salvia which contains the virus, gets put on the plants and then attacks the plants and destroys them. The virus makes the plant have undergrowth which means it doesn’t grow as tall as it is supposed to and the leaves on the plant become curled and will grow in different vertical directions. The virus enters the plant and takes control of the host cell and then attacks the plant and reduces the growth of the plant. As of now, studies show that nothing can save the crop, scientists say the only way to solve the issue is to use pest management technology and seeds. The seeds were made by the government in order to fight viruses that are in plants. Scientists are looking
for causes of the virus and how the virus came to be. The virus does not affect humans but they cause a lot harm to the plants and crops which causes farmers to lose business because they are unable to sell their crops.
My view on the article is that it is good that they are providing us with information on the virus and how to stop it. We should be aware of what viruses are affecting our crops so that we can be more careful when eating things like that. Farmers also need to be aware of what viruses are affecting their crops so that they can find a way to stop it and not lose money. If a virus is found that can affect humans but farmers are unaware of them affecting crops and people eat it, it could seriously harm humans and possibly kill them. Farmers need to be aware of what viruses could be affecting their crops. The ideas in the article are affecting
me as a citizen and as a student because as a citizen I am constantly eating wheat and bread which is made from crops, and if there are viruses in the crops that could be harmful to humans, we as citizens need to be aware of what we are eating. As a student, we are learning about viruses and how and if they affect our body. In a professional field, this discovery affects them because they need to be constantly searching for what new viruses are out there and how they can cure it. The advantage of finding this new virus is that we found a new virus and we know that it is affecting plants not humans. We know that there are
viruses out there that could harm us and now we are becoming more aware of where they are found and how to stop them. A disadvantage is that even if we find a virus, there might not be a cure for it. The next step to improve this is to find cures for the virus and see if we can stop it from destroying our crops.

2) New species of plant discovered:
http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/New-species-plant-discovered/story-16346272-detail/story.html
This article is about a new species of plants that have been discovered it is called frog rush. The new species of plants were found in a lagoon in Rutland Water. Scientists believe that the plant grew there because of wildfowl migrating. The frog rush is a small plant but as of now nothing else is known about it. The good thing is that since these flowers were grown, many birds, plants and
insects came to be.
I think this article is very interesting because finding new species when we believed that we already found all the species is
amazing. We get to examine the species and find out how they grow and how they differ from other plants. The ideas in the article would impact me as a student and as a citizen because you get to learn about mew plants that are being discovered, this plant may help us, for example, its roots may help us make medicine. This plant may also harm us, it may release toxics into the air which could do harm to our body. This affects professionals who are working in the field because the plant may have other “ingredients” that may help us or harm us. An advantage is that a new species of plants has been found and it may be able to help us in certain areas, such as medicine making. A disadvantage is that we don’t know much about it and so we don’t know what it eats and how it behaves. Improvements to this new discovery can be made by searching to see if there are more plants like it or other rare species of plants and by finding out what the plant does and how it acts.
