Canadian Scientist: Kathy Conlan
Not much is known about Kathy Conlan other than that she is an expert in marine creatures that live in the Arctic. Kathy knew she wanted to be a marine biologist when she took a trip down the beach when she was 16. She currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario. In 1972, she got her BSc from Queen’s University, then in 1977, she received her MSc from the University of Victoria and in 1988 she got her PhD from Carleton University. She loved the ocean and knew she wanted to become a marine biologist. She’s been studying marine animals and plants on the Arctic Ocean for many years, while studying animals up North, she also teaches. She teaches children in the North about Science and participates in the Students on Ice program. The Students on Ice program is a
program that takes children on ships around Antarctic and the Arctic. She also teaches villages about her finds. In 2007 she travelled to different villages to explain to people what she found. Her favourite part of her job is deep sea diving, she loves looking at the animals and plants. She also made a book called Under the Ice in 2002 based on the pictures she took and won an award (the prestigious Science in Society Prize). She has received many awards such as the Antarctic Service Medal in 1992, the YWCA Women of distinction Award which she was nominated for twice, one in 1999 and in 2001, she also won the Brock Award for the best Canadian Museum of Nature research paper written of 2003.
