1) Clinical Molecular Geneticist:
A clinical molecular geneticists’ job is to find genetic abnormalities and disorders that are causes of diseases. They use biochemical
and molecular technology to help them with this. Their job is to test the diseases and to find out how it affects the body. They have many goals and duties to perform, they have to analyze and interpret the results they get from molecular genetics, they need to make sure that the results they get are correct. They also need to inform patients and medical genetics professionals
about the results and what they discovered. Some more duties of theirs are to find genotypes of individuals and use tests to discover genetic diseases, they have to write reports based on their findings to clinicians, they have to do research and develop new procedures for trying to solve genetic diseases. Clinical molecular genetics may work alone or in groups with other scientists/ doctors in laboratories. Work hours are long and there are no certain work schedules. The salary they make is approximately $52,880 to $90,640, there are factors such as how long you have been working, how much experience you have, etc. To become a clinical molecular geneticist you need to have an honours degree in biochemistry, biomedical science and other life science courses. You need to go to college/ university for 4 years and then to graduate school to get a PhD which takes up to 4 to 7 years. Some also choose to go to Medical school to get an MD which takes 4 years. Some employers expect you to have training and experience working in a genetics lab.
2) Cytogenetic Technologist:
A cytogenetic technologists’ job is to study how cells divide and to study chromosomes found in blood and bone marrow in order to help in diagnosing a disease and treating the disease. They also do karotyping in order to find disease. Their main job is to examine chromosomes and to find diseases and cures. They also need to be able to tell patients, physicians and other researchers what they found which means that they need to have good communication skills. They should also be able to recognize and find abnormal chromosomes based on colour, shape, size, and patterns. You would be working in a lab environment because you would need to be working with chromosomes and you need to be able to analyze them under a microscope. Most of the time you work be working alone but you sometimes would work in a group or a team. The salary one would make is $38,000 to $50,000 as a beginner but as your get more experience the salary may increase. The educational pathway you would need to take biology, math, and molecular science courses and then get a bachelor degree in medical science or life science which would take about four years. Sometimes, you may have to work or volunteer in a lab.
